After a long freelance work and vacation-related hiatus, I am returning to Dances With Bass Radio. To the two or three people actually reading these, I thank you. I am breaking my radio silence with a rocker from one of my all-time favorite bands, The Cult. Vocalist Ian Astbury’s voice is a force of nature. I still remember seeing The Cult live in 1987 when they opened for Billy Idol at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis. At the time, I knew of The Cult, but I wasn’t yet a fan. However, I can tell you from the first power chords of opening number, Love Removal Machine, I was hooked. The Cult hails from England and straddles the lines between hard rock and goth.Their music is driven by Billy Duffy’s relentless power chords and Astbury’s powerful, howling vocals (for an example, see the long version of this song I posted below). Unbeknownst to many, The Cult is still alive, well, and churning out blistering rock that’s laden with just enough pop punk hooks to keep your boot tapping out the rhythm. I saw The Cult a second time, in 2001 at the Murat with my dearly departed best friend, Mark Reddin, on The Cult’s Beyond Good and Evil album, and it still remains one of the best pure rock-and-roll shows I’ve ever seen. Most remember The Cult for their 1989 breakout album, Sonic Temple, which contained the hits Fire Woman, Edie (Ciao, Baby) and Sweet Soul Sister.
