Lyrics:

I’ve had nothing but bad luck
Since the day I saw the cat at my door
So I came into you sweet lady
Answering your mystical call
Crystal ball on the table
Showing the future, the past
Same cat with them evil eyes
And I knew it was a spell she cast

She’s just a devil woman
With evil on her mind
Beware the devil woman
She’s gonna get you…
She’s just a devil woman
With evil on her mind
Beware the devil woman
She’s gonna get you from behind…

I drank the potion she offered me
I found myself on the floor
Then I looked in those big green eyes
And I wondered what I came there for

Give me the ring on your finger
Let me see the lines on your hand
I can see me a tall dark stranger
Giving you what you hadn’t planned
I drank the potion she offered me
I found myself on the floor
Then I looked in those big green eyes
And I wondered what I came there for…

She’s just a devil woman
With evil on her mind
Beware the devil woman
She’s gonna get you…
She’s just a devil woman
With evil on her mind
Beware the devil woman
She’s gonna get you from behind…

If you’re out on a moonlit night
Be careful of them neighbourhood strays
Of a lady with long black hair
Tryin’ to win you with her feminine ways
Crystal ball on the table
Showing the future, the past
Same cat with them evil eyes
You’d better get out of there fast…

She’s just a devil woman
With evil on her mind
Beware the devil woman
She’s gonna get you…
She’s just a devil woman
With evil on her mind
Beware the devil woman
She’s gonna get you…

She’s just a devil woman
With evil on her mind
Beware the devil woman
She’s gonna get you…
She’s just a devil woman
With evil on her mind
Beware the devil woman
She’s gonna get you…

She’s just a devil woman
With evil on her mind
Beware the devil woman
She’s gonna get you…
She’s just a devil woman
With evil on her mind
Beware the devil woman
She’s gonna get you…

This song makes me think of snowy mornings when we’d listen to the radio for school closings. I remember being glued to the tiny mono radio in the kitchen in my mom’s house and beseeching the DJ to announce that school was closed. We here at Radio DWB dig 70s music, and Cliff Richard is a frequent flyer here.

Rock n’ Roll Juvenile

Devil Woman peaked at number 6 on the Billboard charts in 1976. Richard scored several hits in the U.S., including We Don’t Talk Anymore, in 1979, Dreamin’ in 1980, and Suddenly, a duet with Olivia Newton-John in 1980. Richard had some other minor U.S. hits, but he was an absolute musical phenom in the UK, where he is the third best-selling artist in history, trailing only the Beatles and Elvis Presley. The Brits love him so much, he has won three Brit Awards (the UK equivalent to a Grammy) and was knighted in 1995. He has charted 14 number one singles in the UK over the course of a 50-year career in music.

Enjoy, my babies.

Here is the video for We Don’t Talk Anymore, which clearly shows Richard exploring, ahem, disco. The song appears on 1980’s Rock n’ Roll Juvenile:

Lastly, here is Dreamin’, which unlike many of Richard’s hit abroad, made the U.S. charts and is found on I’m No Hero (1980)
