Lyrics:

How long has this been going on?
How long has this been going on?
Well, your friends with their fancy persuasion
Don’t admit that it’s part of a scheme,
But I can’t help but have my suspicion
‘Cause I ain’t quite as dumb as I seem.

Well, your friends with their fancy persuasion
Don’t admit that it’s part of a scheme

And you said you was never intending
To break up our singing this way,
But there ain’t any use in pretending.
It could happen to us any day.

How long has this been going on?
How long has this been going on?

Oh, your friends with their fancy persuasion
Don’t admit that it’s part of a scheme.
But I can’t help but have my suspicion
‘Cause I ain’t quite as dumb as I seem.

Oh, you said you was never intending
To break up our singing this way,
But there ain’t any use in pretending.
It could happen to us any day.

And how long has this been going on?
How long has this been going on?
How long?
How long has this been going on?
How long has this been going on?
How long has this been going on?
How long?
How long has this been going on?

Ask nearly anyone who performed this 1974 hit, and you’ll get a blank stare. Some people will answer Badfinger or maybe even Firefall, but it actually was a one-hit wonder written and performed by Ace, a British rock group fronted by Paul Carrack.

How Long? was Ace’s only single to chart in the U.S. The opening bass line is purely iconic and is the driving force behind the song. Without that repetitive bass line, this song isn’t a hit…in my opinion anyway. While pulling together the information for this post, I did learn a tidbit about the song. I had always assumed that the song was sung from the perspective of a jilted lover. Instead, Carrack has said it’s actually about band infidelity. Apparently, bassist Terry Comer was “cheating” on Ace by working in secret with the Sutherland Brothers and Quiver. While I like knowing things like this, I still wish it was about good love gone bad. Who can’t relate to that?

Vocalist and founder Paul Carrack would later go on to play in Mike & The Mechanics with Genesis bassist Mike Rutherford, which charted several hits in the 1980s, including All I Need Is a Miracle, and The Living Years.
