While many of the songs I chose for your listening enjoyment come from unknown artists, this one comes from musical legend Neil Young (affectionately known here at the Dances with Bass home offices as “Uncle Neil”).

Shortly before becoming a new father, it occurred to me that not only do I have an awesome responsibility to help raise a fantastic young woman, I also was responsible for setting her on the right path musically. To that end, I wanted the first song her tender young ears ever heard to be perfect. So, in June 2001, Alexa rode home from the hospital, tight in her car seat, while listening to Uncle Neil sing about being a legend in her own time.

Be what you want to be, baby girl, and let your long hair fly in the wind. Don’t listen to this song and think about what could have been; think about what should be.

The world is yours.

 Lyrics:

She used to work in a diner
Never saw a woman look finer
I used to order just to watch
her float across the floor
She grew up in a small town
Never put her roots down
Daddy always kept movin’,
so she did too.
Somewhere on a desert highway
She rides a Harley-Davidson
Her long blonde hair
flyin’ in the wind
She’s been runnin’ half her life
The chrome and steel she rides
Collidin’ with
the very air she breathes
The air she breathes.
You know it ain’t easy
You got to hold on

She was an unknown legend
in her time

She was an unknown legend
in her time
Now she’s dressin’ two kids
Lookin’ for a magic kiss
She gets the far-away look
in her eyes.
Somewhere on a desert highway
She rides a Harley-Davidson
Her long blonde hair
flyin’ in the wind
She’s been runnin’ half her life
The chrome and steel she rides
Collidin’ with the very
air she breathes
The air she breathes.
