  • Track: New Year’s Day
  • Artist: U2
  • Album: War
  • Year: 1983

Lyrics:

Yeah…

All is quiet on New Year’s Day
A world in white gets underway
I want to be with you
Be with you night and day
Nothing changes on New Year’s Day
On New Year’s Day

I will be with you again
I will be with you again

Under a blood-red sky
A crowd has gathered in black and white

Under a blood-red sky
A crowd has gathered in black and white
Arms entwined, the chosen few
The newspapers says, says
Say it’s true it’s true…
And we can break through
Though torn in two
We can be one

I…I will begin again
I…I will begin again

Oh…
Maybe the time is right
Oh…maybe tonight…

I will be with you again
I will be with you again

And so we’re told this is the golden age
And gold is the reason for the wars we wage
Though I want to be with you
Be with you night and day
Nothing changes
On New Year’s Day
On New Year’s Day

On this new year’s day, we at the Dances with Bass corporate tri-level are waxing nostalgic with one of our favorite bands. Obviously, choosing New Year’s Day on New Year’s Day is a bit of an obvious play, but we’re okay with that. It’s Bono after all, and Bono is royalty here, possibly even godly.

U2 hardly needs any introduction, but in case you were wondering, this Irish four-piece has been making music for 42 years—FORTY-TWO. Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullin Jr. have the distinction of being among the precious few bands to have never endured a line-up change and to have never disbanded since forming in 1976 in Dublin, Ireland.

U2 has released 14 studio albums and has sold 175 million records around the world while winning 22 Grammy Awards. Note that I said “winning.” Many artists boast a couple of nominations, but U2 has won 22 pieces of Grammy hardware, which ranks them number one all-time…by far (Alison Krauss and Union Station is a distant second with 14 Grammy wins). During its first year of eligibility (2005), U2 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Rolling Stone magazine ranked then at number 22 in its 100 Greatest Artists of All-Time, which I think is quite low. U2’s Joshua Tree record is a 13-time platinum smash success.

Perhaps even more notable, however, are U2’s philanthropic endeavors. U2 has been a staunch campaigner for human rights and an outspoken advocate for the world’s downtrodden, particularly those who are impoverished and diseased. We here at Dance with Bass Radio are hopeless bleeding hearts, which makes U2 a band that we can feel good about while ringing in the new year.

Peace, my babies. Here’s to hoping 2018 is a damn sight better than the year we’re leaving behind.
