Lyrics:

One day, I was on the ground
When I needed a hand
And it couldn’t be found
I was so far down
That I couldn’t get up
You know and
One day I was one of life’s losers
Even my friends were my ac-cus-ers
And in my head
Lost before I’d begun

I had a dream
But it turned to dust
What I thought was love
That must have been lust

What I thought was love
That must have been lust

I was living in style
When the walls fell in
When I played my hand
I looked like a joker
Turn around
Fate must have woke her
‘Cause lady luck she was
Waiting outside the door

I’m winning
I’m winning
I’m winning
And I don’t intend on losing again

Too bad it belonged to me
It was the wrong time
And I meant to be
It took a long time
And I knew for now
I can see the day
That I breath for
Friends agree there’s a need
To play the game
And to win again

Santana’s album, Zebop! is available on Amazon:

If ever there was a song that simply required that the car windows be down and that the car’s occupants were required to sing along at the top of their lungs, this is that song.

Originally written and recorded by Russ Ballard in 1976, Santana’s cover version was a smash hit, reaching number 2 on mainstream rock charts, and number 17 on Billboard’s Hot 100. This song is sung by Alex Ligertwood, who did a number of stints with the band as its lead vocalist (though Winning was the only Santana song to chart with Ligertwood at the mic). Gregg Rolie was the vocalist for the majority of Santana’s hits, including Black Magic Woman, Oye Coma Va, and Evil Ways. As some of you might know, Rolie was the lead vocalist for Journey before being supplanted by Steve Perry.

Russ Ballard is perhaps best known for singing Argent’s hit, Hold Your Head Up. Among a number of other songs, he wrote Rainbow’s 1979 hit, Since You Been Gone, and America’s 1982 hit, You Can Do Magic.

Even though it might be a bit too cold to crank down the windows today and race down the road singing Winning, I suggest that you do it anyway. It seems as good a way to start a weekend as any.

Be sure to check out the Michael Strahan gap in Ligertwood’s front teeth. Apparently, orthodontia wasn’t at the top of Ligertwood’s list of things to do with his fame and cash.

If you like listening to a song with the lyrics on the screen, then this version is for you:
