The Firm - Self-Titled cover
  • Track: Radioactive
  • Artist: The Firm
  • Album: The Firm
  • Year: 1985

Lyrics:

Well I’m not uptight
Not unattracted
Turn me on tonight
‘Cause I’m radioactive
Radioactive

There’s not a fight
And I’m not your captive
Turn me loose tonight
‘Cause I’m radioactive
Radioactive

There’s not a fight
And I’m not your captive
Turn me loose tonight
‘Cause I’m radioactive

I want to stay with you
I want to play with you baby
I want to lay with you
And I want you to know

Got to concentrate
Don’t be distractive
Turn me on tonight
‘Cause I’m radioactive
Radioactive
Radioactive
Radioactive

I want to stay with you
I don’t want to play with you
I want just to lay with you
And I want you to know

Got to concentrate
Don’t be distractive
Turn me on tonight
‘Cause I’m radioactive oh yeah
Oh yeah radioactive
Don’t you stand, stand too close
You might catch it

A “supergroup” can be defined as a rock band consisting of musicians from other successful bands or solo careers joining forces to melt your face off. (What’s that? Uh-huh…okay, thanks). I’m sorry, that was our crackerjack fact-checking staff here at DWB Radio confirming that, indeed, this is the officially sanctioned definition of a supergroup. Now that that’s settled, I’ll continue…

1984 brought us an unlikely supergroup formed by the eminent guitarist Jimmy Page, best known for his time with The Yardbirds and renowned power-quartet, Led Zeppelin, and singer Paul Rodgers from the bands Free and Bad Company (a supergroup in its own right and a topic for another post). Drummer Chris Slade, formerly of Manfred Mann’s Earth Band and Uriah Heep, and then little-known bassist Tony Franklin, rounded the lineup. Incidentally, Slade would later pound the skins, so to speak, for AC/DC, and Franklin would take his signature fretless bass sound and join up with yet another supergroup, Blue Murder.

I could spin yarns about the intertwining of British rock group members of the 70s and 80s, but again…another topic for another post.

The Firm dropped two back-to-back studio albums: The Firm in 1985, which produced the singles, Radioactive and Satisfaction Guaranteed, and in 1986, dropped the album, Mean Business, which featured tracks like All the Kings Horses and Live in Peace. The band toured the U.S. in 1985 but had previously played only two concerts (yes, just two) in Europe. (Chant: U-S-A…U-S-A…U-S-A!!!)
