Lyrics:

Hey now don’t make a sound
Say have you heard the news today?
One flag was taken down
To raise another in its place

A heavy cross you bear
A stubborn heart remains unchanged
No home, no life, no love
No stranger singing in your name

Maybe the season
The colors change in the valley skies
Dear God I’ve sealed my fate
Running through hell
Heaven can wait

Maybe the season
The colors change in the valley skies
Dear God I’ve sealed my fate
Running through hell
Heaven can wait

Long road to ruin
There in your eyes
Under the cold streetlights
No tomorrow
No dead-end in sight

Let’s say we take this town
No king or queen of any state
Get up to shut it down
Open the streets and raise the gates

I know a wall to scale
I know a field without a name
Head on without a care
Before it’s way too late

Maybe the season
The colors change in the valley skies
Oh God I’ve sealed my fate
Running through hell
Heaven can wait

Long road to ruin
There in your eyes
Under the cold streetlights
No tomorrow
No dead-ends

Long road to ruin
There in your eyes
Under the cold streetlights
No tomorrow
No dead-end in sight

For every piece to fall in place
Forever gone without a trace
Your horizon takes its shape
No turning back, don’t turn that page

Come now, I’m leaving here tonight
Come now, let’s leave it all behind
Is that the price you pay
Running through hell
Heaven can wait

Long road to ruin
There in your eyes
Under the cold streetlights
No tomorrow
No dead ends

Long road to ruin
There in your eyes
Under the cold streetlights
No tomorrow
No dead ends

Long road to ruin
There in your eyes
Under the cold streetlights
No tomorrow
No dead-end in sight

Who knew back in the 1990s that the most talented guy in Nirvana wasn’t Kurt Cobain? And who could’ve ever guessed that Nirvana’s drummer, Dave Grohl wasn’t just a drummer—he was a singer, a guitarist, a first-rate showman, and a drummer?

I’ll be the first to admit that I was never as smitten with Cobain and Nirvana as were many music critics and fans. While Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit is on many critics’ best-of lists, I was always more enamored with Pearl Jam and Soundgarden than I ever was with Nirvana. And I think had Cobain not killed himself, Nirvana’s star would’ve fizzled long ago. I also wonder how long Grohl’s brilliance could’ve remained hidden behind Cobain’s drug use and his fractious relationship with the world? Sad though it was, Cobain’s death led to the emergence of Grohl and the Foo Fighters.

Foo Fighters
The Fabulous Foos

The Fighters’ unusual name has unusual origins. During World War II, American aircraft fighter pilots referred to UFOs and other unexplained aerial phenomena as “foo fighters.” After Cobain’s death, Grohl recorded the Foo Fighter’s self-titled debut album in 1995. He played and recorded all the instruments himself and was the only official member of “the band.” That first album spawned three hit singles—This Is a Call, I’ll Stick Around, and Big Me. Grohl then poached two members of the band, Sunny Day Real Estate—bass player, Nate Mendel, and drummer, William Goldsmith—to tour with him as the Foo Fighters. From there, the rest is, as they say, history. (Drummer and sometimes vocalist Taylor Hawkins joined the Foos at the start of the tour for The Colour and the Shape. Previously, Hawkins was the drummer for Alanis Morissette’s band, and as well as playing drums, is a backing vocalist.)

Long Road to Ruin was the second single from Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace. The record was nominated for five Grammys and won the Best Rock Album in 2007.

The Foo Fighters have released eight studio albums, a live album, and several EPs and have toured the world as one of the most popular rock bands of the past 30 years. The band has released 36 singles, including a number of mainstream rock hits (Learn to Fly, Best of You, Everlong, Wheels, and more). In 2016, despite many rumors to the contrary, the band confirmed that it was not breaking up.

Grohl is aces in my book, not only for his music but for his personal and political beliefs. He is a strong advocate of LGBT rights, has stood up against hate groups such as the Westboro Baptists Religiously Disabled Idiots™, and is an advocate of clean, drug-free living. He’s one cool cat, according to this rocking Liberal.  😎
