Lyrics:

Lido missed the boat that day he left the shack
But that was all he missed and he ain’t comin’ back
A tombstone bar in a juke-joint car, he made a stop
Just long enough to grab a handle off the top
Next stop Chi-town, Lido put the money down and let it roll

He said one more job ought to get it
One last shot ‘fore we quit it
One more for the road

Lido be runnin’, havin’ great big fun, until he got the note
Sayin’ toe the line or blow,
and that was all she wrote
He be makin’ like a beeline,
headin’ for the borderline
Goin’ for broke

Lido, whoa-oh-oh-oh
He’s for the money, he’s for the show
Lido’s waitin’ for the go
Lido, whoa-oh-oh-oh
He said one more job ought to get it
One last shot ‘fore we quit it
One more for the road

Lido be runnin’, havin’ great big fun until he got the note
Sayin’ toe the line or blow, and that was all she wrote
He be makin’ like a beeline, headin’ for the borderline
Goin’ for broke

Sayin’ one more hit ought to do it
This joint ain’t nothin’ to it
One more for the road

Lido, whoa-oh-oh-oh
He’s for the money, he’s for the show
Lido’s waitin’ for the go
Lido, whoa-oh-oh-oh
He said one more job ought to get it
One last shot ‘fore we quit it
One more for the road

Lido, whoa-oh-oh-oh
He’s for the money, he’s for the show
Lido’s waitin’ for the go
Lido, whoa-oh-oh-oh…

From the Department of Misheard Lyrics comes Lido Shuffle by Boz Scaggs. You see, my dad had this album on 8-track, and he listened to it frequently. And I love it, though I was a teenager before I realize that Scaggs wasn’t singing about Leo having one more for the road. Given the similarities in pronunciation—and the commonality of the name, Leo—I think Mr. Scaggs would give me a pass. I mean, I was eight when I first heard it; nevermind that I was 17 before I knew that I’d been singing it wrong all those years.

Fast forward to 2018 and my proper pronunciation of the key word in the song title, Lido Shuffle, remains one of my most-played tracks. It fits into nearly any playlist. It fits nicely right alongside hits of the seventies and eighties, and it rubs elbows amicably with hits from the 2000s.

Boz Scaggs was born William Royce Scaggs; around the age of 14—for reasons we weren’t able to determine—he was given the nickname “Bosley” and eventually adopted “Boz” as his stage name. Scaggs attended the same private school (St. Marks) as Steve Miller (of The Steve Miller Band fame) and the two friends formed a band together, The Marksmen, in 1959. After attending college together, Skaggs played on The Steve Miller Band’s first two records, Children of the Future and Sailor.

In 1976, Scaggs joined with a group of studio musicians who later become known as Toto to record today’s feature record, Silk Degrees. The album spawned several hits including the funk-disco infused Lowdown, the R&B-flavored Lido Shuffle, and It’s Over. Silk Degrees is certified 5-times platinum.Lowdown won a Grammy for best R&B song, and the album as a whole was Grammy nominated for best album.

Scaggs’ next two albums, Down Two Then Left (1977) and Middle Man (1980) both achieved platinum status, though neither scored hits like Silk Degrees. Scaggs ‘ output was sporadic in the eighties and nineties, but he’s released six studio albums in the 2000s. Scaggs hasn’t toured much in recent years. He lives in Napa County, California, where he and his wife grow grapes.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that an official video was made for Lido Shuffle, so we’ll have to settle for this high-quality audio file:
