In the mid-1970s there were few bands with as large a following as the Nova Scotia born band, April Wine…in Canada that is. For the record, the Torontonian rockers of Rush were still relatively unknown at the time, which is neither here nor there, but I knew you’d ask. I mean, sure, there was Paul Anka, but Nickelback wasn’t even on the scene at the time, so there wasn’t much competition. April Wine solidified its original lineup in 1969 with founding members and brothers David and Ritchie Henmen on guitar and drums, respectively, followed by their cousin Jim Henman on bass and singer/guitarist, Myles Goodwyn rounding out the team. The quartet dropped their self-titled debut album in 1971 and found immediate success hitting Canuck airwaves with their first single, Fast Train. Shortly after the album’s release, the band would see the first of thirteen (yes, thirteen) lineup changes when Jim Henmen split. The band’s rollercoaster of success snowballed with their second album, On Record, garnering the attention of (U.S.) American ears, reaching number 32 on the Hot 100 chart. April Wine would go on to release fourteen more studio albums, nine live albums, and be attributed to fifteen compilation albums, that included hits such as Roller, Just Between You and Me, Sign of the Gypsy Queen, and today’s featured track, I like to Rock. Interestingly, the key riff from I Like to Rock was intended to be a blend of The Beatles’ Day Tripper and the Stones’ (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction. The band released its last studio album in 2006, but they continue to tour Canada and perform at the occasional festival in Europe and the U.S. Although the band’s stardom didn’t continue much past the early 80s, I like to think of April Wine as being responsible for inspiring the “air guitar.” Video: The video for I Like to Rock was filmed at Le Studio in Quebec, while recording the album Harder…Faster. The studio was also used by Rush to record Moving Pictures, where they also filmed the videos for their songs, Tom Sawyer, Vital Signs, and Limelight. Incidentally, you’ll notice the same resident German Shepherd making cameo appearances at the end of I Like to Rock and at the beginning of Limelight.
