Lyrics: Gonna find my baby, gonna hold her tight When everything’s a little clearer in the light of day Thinking of you’s working up an appetite
Sky rocket’s in flight, afternoon delight Started out this morning feeling so polite Sky rocket’s in flight, afternoon delight Be waiting for me, baby, when I come around Thinkin’ of you’s workin’ up my appetite Sky rocket’s in flight, afternoon delight |
Tonight on Dances With Bass Radio, we are spinning what very possibly is the dirtiest song ever written being sung by the most wholesome group of people you’ll ever see. Afternoon Delight skyrocketed to number 1 on both the U.S. and Canadian radio charts and has been a staple in one-hit wonder collections ever since. The idea for the song came when by band member Bill Danoff was eating at Clyde’s restaurant in the Georgetown district of Washington D.C. Danoff was there during—wait for it—happy hour. Starland Vocal Band was started by Danoff and his wife, Taffy Nivert. Eventually, Danoff and Nivert added Jon Carroll and Margot Chapman. Carroll and Chapman later married and divorced; Danoff and Nivert eventually split, too. (Apparently, neither couple was getting enough afternoon delight to keep the home fires burning.) Following the success of Afternoon Delight, the band hosted a variety show, The Starland Vocal Band Show, which ran for six weeks on CBS in the summer of 1977. Believe it or not, but David Letterman was a writer and regular on the show. The band broke-up in 1981, and briefly reunited in 1988. So, I don’t think I need to tell you to do this, but just in case: find your baby, hold her tight, and get some afternoon delight (time of day is irrelevant, but afternoon always seems more scandalous). And be sure to sing right into your baby’s ear, “Skyyyyrockets in flight! [insert jet sound here] Afternooooon delight!” Trust me, friends. I’d never steer you wrong.
