Lyrics:

Another day on the road
Got a thousand miles to go
Do another show
In some town that we don’t know
Probably should have stayed in school
But I’m here just like a fool
Banging on a cheap guitar
Trying to catch a shooting star

I got a pocket full of change

Now the show flies by
And I feel like I could die
Sweating blood and beer
Won’t stop this ringin’ in my ears

But everything’s the same
A man can go insane
Trying to make it in this game
I got a pocket full of change

Now the show flies by
And I feel like I could die
Sweating blood and beer
Won’t stop this ringin’ in my ears
There’s a girl from out of town
Says she wants to lay me down
Treat me like a king
Check and see if she’s 18

I got a pocket full of change
But everything’s the same
A man can go insane
Trying to make it in this game
I got a pocket full of change

In the morning it’s the same old thing
An ounce of pleasure to get over a pound of pain
Thank you, ma’am, I hope I see you soon
I think that maybe we’ll get back here again in June

After every show we play
The people stop and say
The thing they wanna know
Why ain’t you on the radio
Because the man in Hollywood
Says that we ain’t any good
And won’t give us any money
‘Cause we play and talk funny

I got a pocket full of change
But everything’s the same
A man can go insane
Trying to make it in this game

I got a pocket full of change
I got a pocket full of change
I got a pocket full of change
I got a pocket full of change

Today’s track comes to you from one of the best—and unfortunately, least-known artists—making music today, Will Hoge.

Hoge hails from Nashville, Tennessee, and has been putting out top-notch records since 1997. Hoge seamlessly blends rock, country, and blues to produce nose-to-tail perfect records one doesn’t see very often in the era of the iTunes single download. Each record has its own flavor, sometimes leaning harder on rock, sometimes blues, and sometimes country—but the end product is always solid. I once heard the late Tom Petty lament the death of the well-crafted record, and while I agree with him that the record is largely dead, there are still artists—such as Mr. Hoge—putting out true records today.

Even better, Hoge tackles heady topics on his records—particularly on his last few releases—from which most artists shy away. And it certainly doesn’t hurt that his social and political bent goes with mine like peas and carrots.

If you are new to Hoge’s music, I suggest picking up copies of Blackbird on a Lonely Wire, Draw the Curtains, The Man Who Killed Love, and Anchors, strap on a pair of high-quality headphones, and listen to an artist who proves that the record isn’t dead.
