Sometimes, we listen to music because it’s deep, passionate, and restorative. Sometimes, we listen to music because it’s a lesson in musical mastery that must be appreciated. Well, this track is neither of those. This track falls squarely into the “we listen to it because it’s fun” category. Canadian rocker Kim Mitchell released Akimbo Alogo in 1985, and Go for a Soda was his only hit in the states (it reached number 12 on the rock charts). Prior to becoming a soloist, Mitchell was a member of a little-known Canadian band, Max Webster. Interestingly, Mitchell eventually became a drive-time radio host in Toronto, holding that gig from 2004-2015. Another tidbit: The album cover featured here was used on the original Canadian pressing, but it was changed in the U.S. to one in which Mitchell is silhouetted.with a guitar. Some countries, including Japan and parts of Europe, banned the U.S. cover because of their anti-smoking stance. Not that it matters, but the cover on my cassette was the contraband smoking image. And we’re rebels here, dammit, so we’re thumbing our noses at authority by using the contraband image. So there. Mitchell was still playing well into the 2000s, but suffered a heart attack and underwent heart surgery in 2016. To my knowledge, he has not returned to the music scene. For a time in my youth, Go for a Soda was a regular in my Camaro-cruising mixtapes, and it still elicits a smile from me today. Is it serious music? No. Is it a great time? Heck yes. We here at the Dances with Bass underground bunker appreciate some good hair metal as much as the folks in the next bunker. So slap this one into your proverbial tape deck, Spinal Tap the volume, and go for a soda. Nobody cares. And nobody cries, drowns, or dies. (And for what it’s worth, some of you might know that “akimbo” means “flung out widely or haphazardly.” Picture me falling on the ice with my arms, legs, and elbows going every which way (but loose). “Alogo” means “horse” in Greek—άλογο. So, “Akimbo Alogo” means a horse that has gone ass over apple cart. The song itself might be goofy, but the music curators here at Dances with Bass Radio strive to be educational even when we’re slinging 80s hair bands.) Video: Here is the quintessential 1980s video, complete with a campy set, goofy special effects, and bad acting. In other words, it’s perfect. (And we here at the DWB studios might have had an experience or two involving tiny people dancing on our coffee tables and in our refrigerators, but we’re not at liberty to discuss them publicly): You Might Also Like:
