Here at the Dances with Bass studios, we are big fans of John Moreland. While he is most known for his folk-country sound of his recent In the Throes and Big Bad Luv albums, Moreland can and does plug-in amps and rock. In 2008, Moreland and The Black Gold Band released Endless Oklahoma Sky, which is replete with crunchy guitars, punk-edged vocals, and big, Springsteenesque melodies. The title track’s bright piano melody makes me think of Bruce Springsteen from the Born to Run era and it pairs perfectly with Moreland’s weathered voice. Moreland is gaining popularity among serious music fans but hasn’t broken into mainstream consciousness yet, which is a shame because he is rife with talent. His lyrics tell stories of working-class middle America and they provide a gritty soundtrack for people struggling with love, loss, and redemption. Endless Oklahoma Sky begs for a windows-down power cruise and the blur of cornfields racing by. Given that it’s frightfully cold and there’s no corn in sight, I’ll just have to settle for a windows-up slide along the highway and fields of cold white. This is the second time we’ve featured Mr. Moreland on DWB Radio and it likely won’t be the last. He is brimming with talent and should be a household name.
