Lyrics: The dream police You know that talk is cheap
Cause they’re waiting for me The dream police Well I can’t tell lies Cause they’re waiting for me I try to sleep Cause they’re waiting for me The dream police The dream police (police, police) |
Here at the Dances with Bass studios, deep in the bowels of our nuclear blast bunker, we’re big fans of power pop. Power pop is defined as pop music that uses a strong melody, lots of guitars, and a simple rhythm. Think rock music that really likes glitter. And Midwestern rockers Cheap Trick deliver power pop by the bushel. Since 1974, Cheap Trick has delivered a stream of top 40 rock hits and it’s live At Budokan album is quite possibly the best live rock and roll performance ever recorded. In fact, some of Cheap Trick’s best-known songs, such as I Want You to Want Me and Ain’t That a Shame, were made hits by this live record and not by their studio-recorded counterparts. Dichotomy has always been Cheap Trick’s game. When the band first formed in Rockford Illinois, they were fronted by the rock and roll duo of vocalist Robin Zander and bassist Tom Petersson and the totally geekitude of guitarist Rick Nielson and dumpiness of drummer Bun E. Carlos. Over its 44 years as a band, Cheap Trick has released 19 studio albums, 6 live albums, 17 compilations, 2 EPs, and 64 singles. In 2016, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The band tours harder than most any other band in the business, boasting more than 5,000 performances. The Dream Police album peaked at number 6 on the charts in 1979, and the single reached number 26 on the charts. A second single from the same album, Voices, reached number 32. Over the years, the lineup has changed a little with Zander and Nielson being the only two mainstays. Petersson split from the band in 1980, but returned in 1987 and been steady since. Drummer Bun E. Carlos split from the band in 2010 amid tensions with—and a lawsuit against—his bandmates. As of 2015, Zander issued a statement saying Carlos was still a member of the band but doesn’t tour or record with them. (I am not entirely sure what that means, but I think it means an undisclosed settlement was reached between the lawyerfolk.)
