We’re closing out a month of great music with a two-fer from Australian rockers, Jet. No, these tracks don’t appear contiguously on Get Born, but when I think about their music, these two tracks are what I believe to be most representative of their signature balls-out, amps-in-your-face sound. I waffled on which track to choose before deciding we make the rules around here, and if we want to feature two tracks on one post, then Judas Priest on a horse¹, we’ll do just that. Jet formed in Australia in 2001 with brothers Nic Cester (vocals and rhythm guitar) and Chris Cester (drums) forming the group’s backbone. They were joined by lead guitarist Cameron Muncey and bassist Mark Wilson. The band’s 2001 debut, Dirty Sweet, didn’t chart, but it did get the attention of record label execs and let to the 2003 release of today’s featured album, Get Born. The single, Are You Gonna Be My Girl?, was used in a worldwide Apple iPod advertising campaign, and appeared on the soundtrack for Madden NFL 2004, Guitar Hero: On Tour, and Guitar Hero: Rock Band. It’s also been used in several movie soundtracks. Cold Hard Bitch, on the other hand, reached number 1 on the U.S. mainstream rock charts, surpassing Are You Gonna Be My Girl? by six chart slots. If you don’t hear the ghost of AC/DC’s Malcolm Young when listening to the crunchy power chords of Cold Hard Bitch, then I think your ears might need a retuning. The band’s follow-up albums, Shine On (2006) and Shaka Rock (2009), were both excellent though they failed to capture the attention showered upon Get Born. Shine On actually charted higher than any of their albums based on initial sales, but singles from the album failed to gain radio traction. In 2012, the band announced that it was breaking up. In 2016, the band reunited and opened shows for none other than The Boss (Bruce Springsteen, to the unwashed) during his summer 2017 tour. As of yet, no official announcements have been made regarding new records, but the editors here at Dances with Bass sometimes sleep with a copy of Get Born under our pillows in hopes of appeasing the rock gods. Drummer Chris Cester lives in Los Angeles and before Jet announced his reunion, he was was performing with the Mystic Knights of Amnesia, which Cester says was named by his friend and former Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher whom Cester jokingly calls “a f***ing loon.” Regardless of whether Jet records another note, Get Born will forever remain one of our favorite straight-up rock and roll records. ¹ “Judas Priest on a horse.” was something my grandmother used to say. I am not sure what made me channel my grandma just then, but I’ve decided it’s best not to question these things. Video: Here is the official video for the hit single, Are You Gonna Be My Girl?
