Every once in a while, a genre-busting artist comes along who defies classification. If you take the time to read reviews of Anderson East’s Delilah, you see listeners try to pigeonhole him as soul, R&B, blues, country, singer/songwriter (whatever that is), and pop. Truth is, all those descriptors are accurate and inaccurate when it comes to East’s Delilah. This amazing record (which sounds like something Stax Records might have released in the 1960s) opens with a delicious homage to doo-wop, switches to blue-eyed soul on Satisfy Me, then continues a genre-defying, 10-track trek through musical brilliance. The one constant is East’s raspy voice that sounds much older than his 30 years. East hails from Athens, Alabama, and dropped his first record, Closing Credits for a Fire, under the name, Mike Anderson. In 2012, he changed his stage name to Anderson East with the release of his self-produced (and seemingly impossible to find) Flowers of the Broken Hearted. In 2015, East dropped Delilah, and in January 2018, Encore is expected to be released—and will find its way into my collection rather immediately. Delilah is a perfect record for a quiet evening at home by the fire while you fiddle with your new Christmas toys. You won’t find many records like this one. The staff here at Dances with Bass industries have their groove on this holiday season, and we hope you will, too.
