The song itself needs no introduction as it is one of the most successful and widely played songs ever written. The song was first written and recorded by Mark James in 1968 but wasn’t a hit until Elvis Presley released his cover version in 1969. Since that time, Suspicious Minds has been recorded by many artists, including Dwight Yoakam, Fine Young Cannibals, B.J. Thomas, and Pete Yorn. Yorn’s version is my favorite. I saw him perform it live in Indianapolis in 2005. Go on, sing along with it. You know you want to. And when you’re done getting in touch with your inner-Yorn, be sure to check out PY’s other work. He is one of my all-time favorite artists, and his debut album, Musicforthemorningafter is one of my desert island records. He most certainly will make more than one appearance on Dances with Bass Radio. I was honored to meet Mr. Yorn at the aforementioned show and he graciously signed my copy of this seminal album. |
