I expect that all of us have heard Aerosmith’s version of Sweet Emotion several thousand more times than we’d actually prefer. It was a great song until FM rock radio ran it into the ground. Never fear. Guitar phenom Leo Kottke, and bassist extraordinaire Mike Gordon have transformed this rock radio staple to something entirely unexpected. Of course, if you’re a fan of Kottke’s, then you’re only mildly surprised because you already know that’s he’s entirely badass. For reasons passing understanding, Kottke doesn’t get the accolades he deserves for his unconventional fingerpicking style. Most of Kottke’s tracks are instrumental, though he does sing from time-to-time, including on this track. Kottke’s vocal style is deep and growling, and is self-described as sounding like “geese farts on a muggy day.” I am guessing that most of his fans—including yours truly—would disagree with his assessment of his vocal capabilities. Give him a listen, and then check out his own material, and if nothing else, get a fresh take on an old song that really needs to be laid to rest. |
