Lyrics: Did you see any action? Well, I’ve been walking behind you Did you have any bad dreams?
You’ve been talking in circles Save my life Bring a good feeling Have you ever been lonely? You never give me no answer There’s never been any reason Save my life Don’t you know Save my life Save my life Save my life |
Tonight, the music curators at DWB Radio have chosen a song that is both one of the greatest one-hit wonders of the classic rock world and is the source for one of the best rock and roll trivia questions. Next time you hear this one on the radio, ask the person nearest you what band performed this song, and better yet, what is the song’s title. Chances are, you’ll get an “I dunno” and “Save My Life,” respectively. Never Been Any Reason was released in the summer of 1975, and believe it or not, I remember riding around in my parents’ green Travelall singing, “Save my life, I’m going down for the last time!” At the tender age of seven, that was a pretty anthemic verse, and it stuck with me. Head East formed in 1969 at the University of Illinois, and believe it or not, is still touring today, despite only having the one signature hit. Interestingly—at least to me anyway—is that the diner in which the band is depicted on the back cover is a real diner that at the time the photo was taken was called the Rite-Way Diner in Olivette, Missouri. Today, it is known as the Olivette Diner. While my sources couldn’t confirm this, word on the diner circuit is that the pancake pictured on the album’s front cover was eaten shortly after the photo was taken. While lead vocals were generally handled by frontman, John Schlitt, vocals on Never Been Any Reason were split between drummer Steve Huston, who sung the first two lines of each verse, and Schlitt who sung the remainder of the song. Never Been Any Reason was Head East’s only significant hit, though they did score a minor hit with a cover of Since You Been Gone, which was written by Russ Ballard (formerly of Argent); most of you will know this song by this far more popular version recorded in 1979 by Rainbow.
